RAJA AMPAT & SPICE ISLANDS CRUISE AVAILABILITY

Coral Expeditions 18-Night Departures & Cabins

Let’s be blunt.

If you’re looking at Raja Ampat & Spice Islands Cruise Availability, you’ve already outgrown mainstream big-ship cruising and are in love with small-ship expeditions like the ones that Coral Expeditions offers on their newest ship, the Coral Geographer

This is where:

  • The water turns electric blue
  • The reefs go off the charts (literally ~75% of the world’s coral species)
  • And the itinerary reads like a 17th-century trading map, only with better wine and service

You’re not ticking boxes here.

You’re entering one of the most biologically rich marine regions on Earth — and doing it on a ship small enough to actually get you there.

What Makes This Different

  • 18-night expedition voyages (no fluff, no filler - adventure, small ship experiences)
  • Darwin ↔ Indonesia sailings (Raja Ampat + Banda / Spice Islands)
  • Access to places big ships physically cannot reach
  • Xplorer tenders = beach landings, remote villages, zero crowds
  • Open bridge, expert guides, proper expedition DNA

This is Coral Expeditions doing what they do best:

👉 Small ship. Big access. No nonsense.

What Are You Actually Looking At?

Think of our Raja Ampat and Spice Island Cruises as straddling our Kimberley cruise season. That's why our dates are in December and January of each year, on in September. They are also only available on our newest Coral Expeditions ship:

Jump quickly. This Indonesian cruise is a winner and must-do!

Which means:

  • Peak season (June–August) fills first
  • Shoulder months (May & September) offer better flexibility
  • Late-season availability can look generous… until it suddenly isn’t

Cruise Highlights - Living the Dream!

Itinerary - 18 Nights - Darwin to Sorong (or reverse)

Charter flight information here.

Board Coral Geographer in Darwin or join via charter flight to Sorong. Settle in, meet your Expedition Team and enjoy the captain’s welcome as the ship departs to retrace ancient maritime routes through Indonesia’s remote and culturally rich Raja Ampat and the Spice Islands.

Enjoy a relaxing day at sea crossing the Timor Sea. Attend briefings on Raja Ampat, Indonesian customs and your upcoming destinations. Use this time to unwind, get acquainted with fellow travellers and enjoy Coral Geographer’s facilities.

Visit the village of Tumbur for a cultural welcome. Meet local woodcarvers and Ikat weavers and explore artisan traditions. Purchase authentic Tanimbarese crafts before returning to the ship for an afternoon at sea toward Banda Neira.

Explore historic Banda Neira and its legacy in the nutmeg trade. Snorkel lava flow reefs, admire Maluku paddlers in kora kora canoes, visit Dutch Fort Belgica, and enjoy traditional dance before sunset drinks overlooking the Banda Sea and volcanic Gunung Api.

Snorkel shallow coral reefs at Molana Island. Later, receive a warm welcome at Saparua Island, tour Fort Duurstede and witness local war dances with cultural adornments—a vivid look into Maluku Island traditions and Dutch-Indonesian history.

Visit Saleman Village on Seram Island. One of the oldest villages in the Maluku islands, Saleman is set in the middle of the Banda Sea, with simple stilt homes over the ocean and a spectacular Karst landscape. Take a meandering walk through the village, engage in local life or go snorkelling in the afternoon.

Enter the heart of Raja Ampat with a stop at Misool. Kayak or swim among limestone karsts in crystal clear waters. Dive or snorkel vibrant coral gardens in some of the world’s most pristine marine habitats.

Be greeted by dancers on pontoon boats, then visit Deer Village. Birders may hike to spot the rare Kofiau Paradise Kingfisher. In the afternoon, snorkel or dive the coral gardens of Boo Kecil, where manta sightings are possible.

Early risers may spot Red or Wilson’s Bird-of-Paradise on a pre-dawn jungle walk. After lunch, visit Piaynemo and climb 300 stairs to panoramic karst and reef vistas—one of Raja Ampat’s most iconic photographic sites.

Cruise Raja Ampat’ stunning lagoons, swim from white sand beaches or stretch your legs on a range of walks and hikes. We have the flexibility to choose from a wide range of islands in Raja Ampat, offering a unique experience for every visit.

Please note - Due to regional community unrest, we will not be visiting Wayag.

Spend a full day snorkelling or diving in Ayu Atoll. The remote coral reefs here teem with marine life, including reef fish, turtles, and colourful coral bommies. Your guides will select the best sites based on conditions.

Enjoy a leisurely sea day as the ship heads towards Cenderawasih bay. Attend guest lectures, review the journey so far, or relax with a book on deck as we prepare for the final leg of this Indonesian adventure.

Cenderawasih Bay is one of the few places on Earth where whale shark encounters are possible. If conditions allow, snorkel and witness these gentle giants. Later, visit Kwatisore village to learn about West Papuan traditions and daily life.

Snorkel over the wreck of a Japanese Zero fighter plane, now an artificial reef teeming with marine life. Connect with the island’s villagers and learn about traditional livelihoods, crafts, and the region’s wartime history.

These weather-dependent locations offer chances to snorkel, dive, or beachcomb along pristine shores. A flexible day focused on relaxed, reef and island experiences in clear tropical waters.

Learn about the arrival of Christianity in West Papua. Visit this culturally significant island, then snorkel coral reefs or dive offshore WWII wrecks. A day of history, reflection and marine exploration.

Enjoy a cultural welcome on Amsterdam Island (seasonal access), part of the Su Islands group. Participate in local traditions, walk the beach and relax or snorkel nearby reefs depending on the tides and schedule.

Disembark in Sorong or Darwin. Bid farewell to new friends and reflect on an unforgettable Spice Islands and Raja Ampat journey.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Raja Ampat is widely considered the most biodiverse marine region on Earth. Located off West Papua, it contains over 1,500 islands and reefs, with an extraordinary concentration of coral and marine life.

In plain terms:
If you’ve snorkelled or dived anywhere else… this resets the benchmark.

No—and this is a big misconception.

Most expedition cruises (including those with Coral Expeditions) are designed for snorkellers first. The reefs are shallow, vibrant, and incredibly accessible straight from the surface.

If you can swim, you’re in the game.

The prime expedition season runs January through March.

This period typically offers:

  • Calmer seas
  • Excellent visibility
  • Peak wildlife activity

Outside these months, conditions become less predictable, which is why most expedition operators concentrate departures in this window.

Most comprehensive itineraries—like those on Coral Geographer—run for 18 nights.

This isn’t a quick in-and-out trip.
It’s designed to properly explore:

  • Raja Ampat
  • Cenderawasih Bay
  • The Banda / Spice Islands

Anything shorter usually means compromises.

Most sailings operate between:

  • Darwin (Australia) and
  • Eastern Indonesia (often Sorong or Ambon)

This allows for a seamless transition between Australian expedition cruising and remote Indonesian regions.

Don't forget...we are here to help...with hotel bookings, flights, travel insurance and more!

Coral Geographer carries approximately 120 guests when at full capacity.

This is critical.

It means:

  • Faster shore landings
  • Access to remote locations
  • A genuinely small-group experience

Not a floating resort.

Typically, your cruise fare includes:

  • All meals onboard
  • Daily guided excursions
  • Use of expedition tenders (Zodiacs / Xplorer boats)
  • Lectures and expert guides
  • Selected beverages with meals

Flights, visas, and travel insurance are usually additional.

Expect pricing from around AUD $23,000+ per person, depending on cabin type and departure.

Balcony cabins and premium categories can be significantly higher.

This is a high-demand, low-supply expedition—pricing reflects that.

Ideally 12–18 months in advance.

Why?

  • Very limited departures
  • Small ship capacity
  • High repeat guest demand

By the time most people start looking seriously, availability is already tight.

Raja Ampat delivers consistently:

  • Reef sharks
  • Manta rays
  • Turtles
  • Vast schools of tropical fish

In certain regions like Cenderawasih Bay, encounters with whale sharks are also possible.

Honestly? Not always.

This experience is best suited to:

  • Well-travelled guests
  • Expedition-minded travellers
  • People comfortable with flexible itineraries

If you’re expecting casinos, shows, or rigid schedules—this isn’t that.

You don’t need to be an athlete—but you do need to be reasonably mobile.

Expect:

  • Wet landings
  • Getting in/out of small boats
  • Light walking on uneven terrain

If you’re active and comfortable in the water, you’ll be fine.

Yes, most travellers will require an Indonesian visa.

This is usually straightforward (often visa-on-arrival), but requirements can change—so it’s worth confirming before travel.

Simple math:

  • Very few ships operate here
  • Even fewer do it well
  • Ships like Coral Geographer carry only ~120 guests

Add in global demand, and you get chronic undersupply.

If you’re asking the question, you’re probably the right traveller.

This isn’t about ticking off a destination.
It’s about accessing a part of the world that very few people ever experience properly.

For the right traveller—
it’s not just worth it, it’s hard to top.
